Man and Van Highbury Health and Safety Policy

Man and Van Highbury is committed to maintaining a safe and healthy environment for our customers, employees, contractors and members of the public. This Health and Safety Policy sets out our approach to risk management, safe working practices and responsibilities in relation to our removal and transport services.

Policy Statement

Our objective is to prevent injury, ill health and damage to property during all moving and transportation activities. We aim to identify and control risks associated with lifting, carrying, loading, unloading, driving, parking, and working in and around homes, offices and other premises. Health and safety considerations are given equal priority to service, quality and cost.

Management Responsibilities

Management at Man and Van Highbury is responsible for implementing and maintaining this policy. This includes:

Ensuring that suitable and sufficient risk assessments are carried out for regular removal activities and specific jobs where needed. Providing appropriate training, information and instruction to staff to enable them to work safely. Supplying and maintaining safe vehicles, equipment and tools. Reviewing incidents, near misses and customer feedback to improve safety performance. Regularly reviewing and updating this policy to reflect changes in legislation, industry standards and working practices.

Employee Responsibilities

All employees and regular contractors have a duty to safeguard their own health and safety, and that of others affected by their work. Employees must:

Follow the procedures and safe systems of work set out by the company. Use vehicles, handling equipment and protective gear correctly and for their intended purpose. Report hazards, defects, incidents and near misses promptly to management. Cooperate with training, supervision and health and safety initiatives. Refrain from working under the influence of drugs or alcohol, or when unfit to work safely.

Risk Assessment and Planning

Before each removal or transport job, Man and Van Highbury will consider the specific risks associated with the work. This may include reviewing customer information, discussing access and parking, and assessing the nature of items to be moved. Where required, on-site assessments will be carried out to identify hazards such as restricted access, stairs, heavy or awkward loads, fragile items, or shared spaces with other users.

Work will be planned to minimise manual handling risks, avoid unnecessary lifting and carrying, and reduce the likelihood of slips, trips and falls. Where risks cannot be eliminated, control measures will be introduced to ensure work is carried out as safely as reasonably practicable.

Manual Handling and Use of Equipment

Manual handling is a core part of removal work, and particular care is taken to protect staff from musculoskeletal injuries. Employees are trained in safe lifting techniques, team lifting and the use of handling aids. Heavy, bulky or awkward items will only be moved by suitably trained staff and with appropriate equipment such as trolleys, dollies, straps and blankets.

All equipment used during removals and transport is inspected regularly and maintained in a safe condition. Defective or damaged equipment must not be used and will be removed from service until repaired or replaced.

Vehicles, Driving and Transport Safety

Our vehicles are maintained to a high standard and are subject to regular checks to ensure they are roadworthy and suitable for the work undertaken. Drivers are required to carry out basic pre-use checks and to report any issues without delay.

Safe driving practices are mandatory at all times. Drivers must obey road traffic laws, comply with parking regulations, and drive in a manner that protects passengers, other road users and pedestrians. Loads are secured appropriately to prevent movement, damage or risk to people when vehicles are in motion or doors are opened.

Customer Premises and Public Safety

When working in or around customer premises, Man and Van Highbury staff will act in a way that minimises disruption and risk. Access routes will be planned to avoid unnecessary obstruction and to maintain safe passage for occupants and visitors.

Care is taken to protect property, fixtures and fittings, including the use of covers and other protective materials where appropriate. Staff are expected to be courteous, to respect customer property and privacy, and to leave working areas tidy and free of discarded materials that could cause hazards.

Personal Protective Equipment

Where the nature of the work requires it, suitable personal protective equipment will be provided, such as protective footwear and gloves. Staff must use any equipment issued for their safety and report any defects or issues immediately so that replacements can be arranged.

Training, Information and Supervision

Man and Van Highbury provides appropriate induction and ongoing training for all relevant staff. This can include safe lifting techniques, equipment use, vehicle safety, customer care and emergency procedures. New or inexperienced staff will be supervised until they are competent to perform tasks safely on their own.

Health and safety information is communicated clearly and reviewed periodically to ensure that it remains current, relevant and understood by all employees.

Accidents, Incidents and Emergency Procedures

All accidents, injuries, near misses and significant incidents must be reported to management as soon as possible. This allows us to investigate the causes, record findings and implement measures to prevent recurrence. Where necessary, external emergency services will be contacted without delay.

Staff are expected to cooperate fully with any investigations and to provide honest and accurate information to support continual improvement in safety standards.

Monitoring and Continuous Improvement

This Health and Safety Policy is monitored and reviewed on a regular basis to ensure it remains effective and appropriate to the scale and nature of our operations. Lessons learned from day-to-day work, incident investigations and changes in regulations are used to refine our approach.

By working together, management and staff at Man and Van Highbury are committed to providing removal and transport services that prioritise the safety and wellbeing of everyone involved.
